 THE CENTURIONS CLUB

Club records show that, since 1953, no less than 27 players have joined YMCA’s most exclusive group, The Centurions Club and the numbers are rising fast…

The earliest known record of a YM player completing a century in senior cricket was in the early 50’s when C.Baxter scored 134 not out in, what the averages indicate was, his only innings for the club. Some fifty years later and Baxter’s mammoth score has still not been beaten, although many batsmen have come very close including Ben Milsom who equalled Baxter’s score in the late 1990’s, before frustratingly falling a single run short of a new record.

Harris – scored more centuries than any other YMCA player

Perhaps not surprisingly, the player with the most tons to his name is the elegant middle-order batsmen, Lionel Harris who has made four centuries at senior level including the highest Second Eleven total of 123*. As a result of his superb achievement, Harris was recently included in the YMCA’s All-time Greatest Eleven.

Meanwhile, the highest ever league score goes to Steve Buckland who’s undefeated 131 at Failand & Portbury in 1989 is regarded by many of his contemporaries as the best innings they have seen.

Steven and Kirk – quality batsmen who made their mark in 2003

In more recent times, as the Golden Hill outfit has witnessed a welcome revival of fortunes, an increasing  number of current players, seven in all, have joined The Centurions Club. The 2003 season saw three new additions, an unprecedented number for one year, with James Steven and Pete Kirk both scoring the first hundreds during the excellent Second Eleven campaign.

Finally, perhaps the most remarkable century was hit by Matt Quaife during an Under 15s match against Winterbourne in 2005. The fourteen year old smashed 102 in just 13.5 overs, breaking Mike Smith's car windscreen along the way!
